| UNDERSTANDING AND OVERCOMING THEIR POWER - Mother love is often seen as sacred, but about twenty percent of people find more pain than support in their relationship with a mother. This book uses the newest research on human attachment and brain development to uncover the secrets of this powerful relationship and to show what sometimes goes wrong. - Children of difficult mothers often show great resilience, but in all stages of life they face extra challenges to establishing a comfortable sense of self-worth and trust in other people. All mothers are sometimes difficult, but a mother who persistently uses a son or daughter's continuing love and dependence as a means of control or manipulation presents a dilemma that a child experiences as a choice between life and death. - The dilemma imposed by a difficult mother is: "Either develop complex and constricting coping mechanisms to maintain a relationship with me, at great cost to your own outlook, imagination and values, or suffer ridicule, disapproval, or rejection. A child does not have the option to say to a mother, “I don't care whether you think I'm bad, or, I am not frightened by the prospect of your leaving me.” A primitive panic at rejection lasts long after the child’s physical helplessness comes to an end. This book shows five different types of difficult mother – the angry mother, the controlling mother, the narcissistic mother, the envious mother, and the emotionally neglectful mother. It describes the intricacies of mother/child love and explains why a mother has such a powerful impact on us and why we continue to care about her responses long after we have outgrown our dependence on her. It suggests ways we can conduct an “emotional audit” on ourselves to overcome the power of those difficult feelings a difficult mother may inflict on us. Upcoming Release Terri Apter, Ph.D. is as senior tutor at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. Her first book on mothers and teenage daughters, Altered Loves, was a New York Times Notable Book of the year. | HOW TO UNLEASH THE BOOZE-INHALING, ANIMAL-SLAUGHTERING,
WAR-GLORIFYING, HAIRY-CHESTED, RETRO-SEXUAL WITHIN...JUST LIKE PAPA! - A
hilarious guide, showing the modern man how to booze, battle, and bull-fight
his way to becoming more like Hemingway. For fans of Hemingway and his books, as well as fans of humor titles like those of Tucker Max, this title pokes fun at today’s modern man—obsessed with Facebook, Twitter, and Playstation—and shows what they can learn from the man who embodied masculinity—Ernest Hemingway. Profane, insightful, hilarious and loaded with photos, facts and insights about Papa, the book includes advice like: -How to kill enough animals to render a species endangered—just like Papa! -Getting your friends to think drinking a daiquiri is manly…just by drinking one nine yourself -Achieving sufficiently high testosterone levels to never have to worry about the chance of having a daughter instead of a son. And much more! Originally a small, self-published book, The Heming Way reached the #1 spot on Amazon’s Humor/Parody Bestseller List, and received rave reviews, some media attention, and interest from all over the country. The author has expanded the book significantly for us. It will include more than 2 dozen archival photos of Hemingway hunting big game, drinking heavily and sporting various large weapons. The book will also include sidebars, quotes, charts, lists, factoids, quizzes and other illustrative aspects, to make for a terrific package. | A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF AMERICA - What do you do if you want
to get underneath the skin of a country, to understand its people and feel
its heartbeat? You can follow the rest of the tourists or, like Steve Boggan,
you can take the advice of Watergate reporter Bob Woodward's source Deep
Throat and "Follow the Money". - Starting from the geographical
dead centre of the continental USA, Boggan did just that - he set free a $10
bill and followed it on an epic journey for 30 days and 30 nights through six
states and 3,000 miles armed only with a sense of humour and a small and
increasingly dirty set of clothes. - He cut crops with farmers in Kansas,
pursued a repo-woman from Colorado, got wasted with a blues band in Arkansas
and hung out at a quarterback's mansion in St Louis. Add to that the
missionaries from Missouri, the Amish in Michigan, the banker from Chicago
and the deer hunters from Detroit, and what emerges is a chaotic,
affectionate and funny portrait of a modern-day America that tourists rarely
see. - An article based on Steve’s trip was published in The Guardian. Steve
returns to the US this autumn to make a documentary film of his trip. Steve Boggan has been a news, features and investigative journalist for more than thirty years. A former Chief Reporter with The Independent, he has also written extensively for The Times, The Guardian, The London Evening Standard and the Daily Mail. He lives in London. |

an. SINGLE WOMEN I HAVE LOVED - Rachel Berkowitz /Crown: "This proposal, by a charming journalist named Kate Bolick, is short and brimming with opportunity. It's based on her Atlantic Monthly piece about women choosing not to marry, and the seismic shift this represents for our culture. Although the article turned her into a mini-celebrity, the book is bigger and more personal. I am attaching the article, together with supporting material, because I think it’s important to understand the ambition and scope of Kate’s work. Taken together, these pieces constitute a truly impressive body of work, in which even the short essays are executed with great panache and attention to detail. From the agent’s letter: “Kate’s sensibility, of course, is so distinctive and appealing; the “Kateness” of Kate is always there. But the allure of this material goes beyond style and personality. There is also a deep intellectual coherence, in terms of her abiding fascinations with design, literary culture, and what one might call, hopefully without sounding too pretentious, self-fashioning. I am also struck by a core tension in Kate’s work (a very productive tension) between the poles of “home” and “adventure,” domesticity and autonomy. It generates an enormous amount of energy. It might even be said to define the shape of a life.” Which brings us to AMONG THE SUITORS. Kate is proposing a book that takes inspiration from “All the Single Ladies” but goes beyond the obvious and moves from journalism to literature. It will be in Kate’s own personal voice and experience. She won’t be restricted by examining trends or headlines. “Through the lives of six (dead) women who stepped outside certain boundaries in ways both obvious and not, Kate will analyze how their lives reflect her own and the culture at large. It's effortlessly well-written, contemporary and full of well-turned insights. Like the women Kate has collected into her cherished personal pantheon of notable “single ladies” through time, she is giving herself free rein here, and the results are exhilarating--a potent blend of irresistible personal writing with cultural history, aesthetic analysis, and a philosophical exploration of the central question: what satisfying shapes can a woman’s life have, beyond the traditional one-way vector to matrimony? This turns out to be a pressing question, perhaps the MOST pressing question, for millions of women, especially in a world that is closer than ever before to gender parity. In the hands of a writer who can deploy both humor and moral seriousness at the same time, whose style is marked by both poetic compression and conversational intimacy, and whose critical chops are as sharp as her heart is warm and generous, I believe this question will find its most compelling exploration to date.” " |

| In 1937 an ordinary grammar school teacher on the island of Maui
took a ragtag group of boys—children of impoverished sugar cane plantation
workers—and, in three short years, transformed them into Olympic
champions. He called his plan the
"3 Year Swim Club." None of the barefoot children had ever laid eyes on a pool; their only experience in water was playing naked in the filthy irrigation ditches that snaked down from the mountains and into the sugar cane fields. And the coach knew nothing about coaching and couldn't swim a lap to save his life. But, against all odds, war, the boys embarked on an unlikely path that became one of the most celebrated and proudest moments in US history. Julie Checkoway is an author and documentary filmmaker. She graduated from Harvard College, the Iowa Writers Workshop, and the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts individual artist grant and fellowships at writers' colonies, including Yaddo. an. ADAPT TO THE FUTURE, INVEST IN YOURSELF, AND TRANSFORM YOUR CAREER - Debuts on the New York Times advice/how-to bestseller list on March 4th at #1! - Co-founder and chairman of LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman has written a revolutionary new book on how to apply the strategies of successful entrepreneurship to one’s career: in short, how to run the “start-up of you.” - A career used to be a smooth and steady path with increasing power, income, and job security at each step. Now the average person will change jobs 11 times in their lives, wages are virtually stagnant, creative disruption is rocking every industry, global competition for jobs is fierce, pensions are not guaranteed, and job security is a thing of the past. We’re all on our own when it comes to our careers. - Based on all they have observed from the epicenter of the start-up world, as well as the reams of LinkedIn data shedding light on the best and worst career-building strategies, Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha argue that the new model for success is learning to think and act like those whose livelihoods rely on being nimble, innovative, and self-reliant. In other words, think and act like an entrepreneur. Here, they show how we can apply a host of entrepreneurial skills and strategies behind the most successful start-ups and businesses to our business: that is, our career. Reid Hoffman is cofounder and chairman of LinkedIn, the biggest professional social network in the world, with 100 million members. In 2010, Fast Company named him the 17th Most Creative Person in Business, and Vanity Fair ranked him number 14 on their list “The Next Establishment.” Ben Casnocha is an entrepreneur and writer, named by BusinessWeek as one of “America’s best young entrepreneurs.” Publishers can use the Linkedin logo without any extra permission as long as they use it like Crown did on their cover (e.g. the logo can’t be too big, and not all over the jacket). - Rights sold to: Random House Business (BCOM); Elsevier (Brazil); EGEA (Italy); Nikkei (Japan); Random House Korea (Korea); Shanghai Xiron (China); Commonwealth Magazine (Taiwan); RH Mondadori/Conecta (Spain). "Everyone, women and men alike, needs to think big to succeed. This is a practical book that shows you how to take control and build a career that will enable you to have real impact." -Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer, Facebook "Being an entrepreneur isn’t really about starting a business. It’s a way of looking at the world: seeing opportunity where others see obstacles, taking risks when others take refuge. Whatever career you’re in ¬ or want to be in ¬ The Start-Up of You holds lessons for success." -Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg, L.P. and Mayor, New York City "Forging a fulfilling career is one of the most important--and often, most difficult--challenges in building a happy life. The Start-Up of You is crammed with insights and strategies to help each of us create the work life we want." -Gretchen Rubin, author of the #1 bestseller, The Happiness Project "The Startup of You" describes how to take the Silicon Valley approach to building a life: start with an idea, and work over your entire career to turn it something remarkable. In the world today, I think that the startup approach to life is necessary. This book distills the key techniques needed to succeed." -Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, co-founder of Square “Silicon Valley revolutionizes entire industries through the way we work. It is now time to export our playbook to the rest of the world. The Startup of You is that key playbook: it will help you revolutionize yourself and achieve your own career breakout.” -Marc Andreessen, co-founder Netscape; director at HP, Facebook, and eBay "A profound book about self-determination and self-realization. By capturing and universalizing the wisdom of successful start-up businesses, the authors provide an exciting blueprint for building a fulfilling career. Invaluable for any person who wants to be a successful entrepreneur ¬ not in a particular company ¬ but in the most important enterprise of all: one's own life." -Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark "In a networked world, learning is not about filling your head with information, but rather learning to learn and learning to think.. The Start-Up of You describes this networked world wonderfully, and offers a guide to professionals for how to thrive in it." -Joi Ito, Director, MIT Media Lab “In times of change and uncertainty...adaptability creates stability. It is insights like this that make The Startup of You such a compelling new way to approach your life. | CHILE'S FIGHT FOR A PEACEFUL AND DEMOCRATIC AND PROSPEROUS FUTURE. A political memoir
from former Chilean president Ricardo Lagos with a foreword by Bill
Clinton. Ricardo Lagos has been shaping the future of Chile for over five decades. A leader in the underground resistance movement against Augusto Pinochet and his Dirty War, Lagos exploded onto the national stage in 1988 when he gave a speech denouncing the dictator—the first of its kind. Revolution soon followed as Chileans took to the streets in one of the first oustings of a criminal dictator in history. In The Southern Tiger, Lagos shares the story of Chile’s journey from terror and repression to a thriving open society during his presidency. Chile has emerged from crushing poverty to become one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America and adopted a centrist government that avoids the hard-line traps on both left and right. Lagos has been an important voice in global politics, as well. From his role in overthrowing Pinochet to his global leadership in trying to put a halt to George W. Bush’s war in Iraq, Lagos has been at the forefront of international politics for years, and this memoir will provide an eye-opening look at some of the biggest events of recent decades. Particularly relevant, with current wave of populist uprisings, Chile’s example offers a sustainable political and economic model for new democracies to follow. This is a fascinating look at Chile’s rise under a charismatic and visionary leader and its role in today’s global community. The book has been co-authored by Blake Hounshell and Elizabeth Dickinson, who are the managing editors of Foreign Policy magazine. And it will feature a foreword by former US President Bill Clinton. an. THE RISE OF ARTIFICIALLY INTELLIGENT TRADING MACHINES AND THE LOOMING THREAT TO WALL STREET. Scott Patterson chronicles the next-generation threat: Wall Street's growing embrace of artificial intelligence and the chilling prospect that soon so much of the trading process will be ceded to computers that humans will cease to know exactly what is going on--or what could happen. In Dark Pools, former Wall Street Journal reporter Scott Patterson shows that the insane quest for speed is completely transforming stock trades (one company just spent $300 million to gain 3 millionths of a second. Past a certain point, the ability of humans to maintain control breaks down. And there is an even bigger game happening-- the quest to build automated trading machines that completely eliminate the market's riskiest and most fickle influence: people. The idea is to create a program that learns from each trade it processes, to create, in effect, a "robot version of Warren Buffett"--but one whose knowledge never peaks. As the money grid extends its tentacles over the planet, and the "market conversation" becomes, increasingly, one super-intelligent machine talking to another in private unregulated exchanges called "dark pools.” The system has almost no transparency now. Is it possible that the entire system will become shrouded in darkness--a classic "black box" on a global scale? Patterson’s previous book THE QUANTS (Crown Business, 2009) was a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. The New York Times called The Quants "fascinating and deeply disturbing"... BusinessWeek praised the way that it "sheds light on a secretive world"...the Financial Times declared it "riveting" ... and the New Republic touted it as "brilliant." Rights to THE QUANTS were licensed to Random House Business Books (UK & Comm), Bestseller (Brazil), Kadakowa (Japan), Cheers (China) and Dasan (Korea) Scott Patterson is a staff reporter at the Wall Street Journal, covering government regulation from the nation's capital. |

| BILL GATES IN HIS OWN WORDS - In the wake of Steve Jobs’ recent
death, the overwhelming interest in not only the details of Jobs’ personal
life, but also of his business philosophy, has naturally extended to other
business titans, including to the one other person who is and always will be
compared to Jobs: Microsoft Corporation founder Bill Gates. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s wealthiest men – as well as one of the most controversial founders and CEOs in history – businesspeople of all stripes have for years taken their cues from Gates, using his words and business strategies to help create and grow their own companies. And despite the fact that he has certainly had his critics throughout the years, after he left running the day-to-day operations of Microsoft in 2008 to devote himself full-time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a kinder, gentler side began to emerge. People involved in their own philanthropic efforts, whether in a professional or part-time capacity, began to take a second look at the man. IMPATIENT OPTIMIST: BILL GATES IN HIS OWN WORDS will appeal to readers of both sorts, business people and the more philanthropically-minded. IMPATIENT OPTIMIST: BILL GATES IN HIS OWN WORDS will contain about three hundred quotations, arranged into between 75 and 100 categories. A short Introduction and a biography of Gates will precede the quotations, and a timeline of his life will follow them. |

an. REJECTING MIDDLE AGE, BECOMING ONE OF THE WORLD'S FITTEST MEN, AND DISCOVERING MYSELF - “I’m a forty-five year old man. A husband and a father who just five years ago crouched , winded in my bathroom, fearing a heart attack. If you had told me back then that I’d be sitting where I am today, enjoying a level of fitness and vitality beyond anything I previously thought possible, I would have said you were a lunatic. I simply couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams that my life would unfold as it has. And yet here I stand. How is this possible?” - On the eve of his 40th birthday, Rich Roll was in bad shape. His days were filled with work, stress, and junk food and his nights were spent on the couch, remote in hand. Taking out the trash was the closest he came to exercise, and, at 50 pounds overweight, a walk up the stairs left him winded. He decided it was time to make a change. - The change was about much more than just an exercise regime. To realize his potential, Rich had to change his diet (he became a committed vegan), and cultivate an entirely new outlook. He was profiled by Men's Fitness as one of the world's 25 fittest men. Among Roll's many jaw-dropping athletic feats: he completed the unprecedented "Epic 5"--five back-to-back Ironman-distance triathlons on five different Hawaiian islands in under a week--an achievement many said was impossible. This is the story of that remarkable transformation, a complete physical and spiritual rejuvenation that proves that anyone can "find ultra" if they know how. - FINDING ULTRA is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats—and much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Rich’s account rivets—and, yes, it instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique. But this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism. He cultivates an entirely new outlook, one that saw past the obstacles modern life kept throwing in his way and zeroed in on what really matters. It challenges all of us to rethink what we’re capable of. RICH ROLL is a graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School. He lives in California. |

| LEARNING THE LANGUAGE OF ANIMALS -For readers interested in
linguistics, animals, and natural science, this is a fascinating exploration
of animal language and communication by one of the foremost researchers in
the field. Groundbreaking research has been done teaching animals human language, but what about the other way around? Studies have shown that lizards, squid, monkeys, and birds are talking to each other, communicating information about food, predators, squabbles, and petty jealousies. These animal languages are unique and highly adaptive; and by exploring them, we come to appreciate the basis of our own languages. Understanding or even “speaking” these languages allows us to get closer to the other species who inhabit this planet with us. The implications of animals having language are enormous. It has been one of the last bastions separating “us” from “them.” Con Slobodchikoff posits that the difference is one of degree, not the vast intellectual chasm that philosophers have talked about for millenia. Filled with meticulous research, vivid examples and daring conclusions, this book will challenge readers’ assumptions and open up new possibilities of understanding our fellow creatures. CON SLOBODCHIKOFF is a professor of biology at Northern Arizona University and director of the Animal Language Institute. |

an. A FAMILY EPIC - Both brilliant and troubled, the Redgraves are some of the most accomplished and revered actors in history. But their story has never before been told. In his new book, bestselling biographer Donald Spoto draws on his personal relationships with the family, and includes original, never-before published interviews. It all began in 1907 with the bigamous marriage of actress Daisy Scudamore and matinee idol Roy Redgrave and the birth of their son, Michael Redgrave. Michael's family and his wild social circle knew that he was insistently bisexual, notwithstanding his marriage to Rachel Kempson, one of England's most glamorous actresses. Their children Vanessa, Corin, and Lynn established fiery and dramatic careers in their own right. Vanessa is the only British actress ever to win the Oscar, Emmy, Tony, Cannes, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards. Lynn’s breakthrough role in the movie Georgy Girl, her prizewinning, one-woman play Shakespeare for My Father, and her Oscar-nominated role in Gods and Monsters, established her as a very different Redgrave. Corin, known for his acclaimed stage performances in Not About Nightingale, A Man for All Seasons, and Excalibur, continues to be the most politically active member of the family; a tireless and outspoken radical. The family tradition reached its high point in the life and career of Vanessa's daughter, Natasha Richardson, who won a Tony for her role in the revival of Cabaret, but died suddenly after a skiing accident in 2009. With a supporting cast including George Bernard Shaw, Elizabeth Taylor, Liam Neeson, Richard Burton, Katharine Hepburn, Kate Winslet, Robert Redford, and the Windsors, THE REDGRAVES is a rich tapestry of a family that has defined and extended the possibilities for actors on stage, screen and television in Britain, America and around the world. Donald Spoto is the author of 25 books, including the bestselling biographies of Alfred Hitchcock, Tennessee Williams, Laurence Olivier, Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman, and Audrey Hepburn. |

| THE KISS IMAGES - A Photo Book with Extensive Text by Alfred
Wertheimer, Barbara Gray, and Alanna Nash. “The Kiss” is purportedly one of the most famous photographs ever taken of Elvis: but who is the illusive woman in the photograph? Alanna Nash, on assignment from Vanity Fair, proved the woman’s identity as Barbara Gray, 75, of Charleston, S.C., after Gray stepped forward to claim her place as the receiver of the intimate gesture. With the article receiving more than 650,000 hits in three days, spawning an appearance on The Today Show for Gray and the photographer, both are now enjoying a three-year traveling Smithsonian exhibition of Wertheimer’s photographs, “Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer,” at various galleries and museums through the spring of 2013. The three are now collaborating on a new photograph book, Elvis ’56, The Kiss Images, that would present all 51 black-and-white images that Wertheimer shot of Presley and Gray that day—in the coffee shop, in the cab, and at the theater—augmented by another dozen or so shots of Elvis alone in Richmond. Many of them have never been published. No other photographer would capture such startlingly intimate moments or chronicle such an important phase of Elvis’s career. Extensive text by Alfred Wertheimer, Barbara Gray, and Alanna Nash will accompanying these photos. Author Alanna Nash is a New York Times best-selling author and ghostwriter. Her works include Baby, Let’s Play House: Elvis Presley and the Women Who Loved Him (It Books/HarperCollins), and The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story Of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley (Simon & Schuster), winner of the 2004 Belmont Award for the best book in music. She is also the co-editor of the prize-winning Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Country Music in America (DK), as well as the ghostwriter of a number of other books. Nash has written scores of magazine articles for such publications as Vanity Fair, People, Entertainment Weekly, Ladies Home Journal, The New York Times, and Reader's Digest, where she was a contributing editor from 2004-2008. Even 3 months after its first publication, Elvis Presley: The Story Behind His Iconic ‘Kiss’ Photograph <http://www.vanityfair.com/services/lookup/d80ec780-e943-4352-a7cd-2f8c4af6a16d> is still the most popular story on the Vanity Fair website.
